JOSEPH PIPPIN

(Abt 1764 - Bef 1850)

Tradition has given Joseph the middle name of "Howell". However, this is not substantiated by any record except in a letter written in the 1930's - not even the initial "H" has been found in any records. He was sometimes referred to as Joseph Pippin, Junr. to distinguish him from his uncle Joseph.

Bobby Fox is the only Pippin resource I've found that gives an exact birth date as 12 May 1768 for Joseph Pippin and places his birth in Edgecombe Co. Other research shows he was probably born circa 1764 in Maryland.

Noah Pippen, 1 male over 16, 3 females

First mention of Joseph in the records of Edgecombe County is a deed dated 19 Jun 1790 when he purchased land from his father. His named last appears in Edgecombe Co in Aug 1807 as he is in arrears for his 1806 taxes. He moved his family to Tennessee, about 1808-1810 and is on the Jackson County tax lists 1808-1811 as Joseph Piping.

The Feb Court of 1798 gave Joseph Pippen "Junr" administration on the estate of Solomon Pippen, dec'd. He entered Bond of 2000£ with Joseph Pippen Senr & Thomas Jenkins.
Joseph Pippin Senr was his slightly older 1st cousin, son of John Pippin. Joseph's father was Solomon.
The 1790 and 1800 census for Edgecombe Co NC and 1820 for Jackson Co TN reveal 13 children, 4 daughters and 9 sons. The two oldest daughters have not been identified; they could have been married prior to the family's move to Tennessee.

Joseph's family settled on Blackburn's Fork of Roaring River in Southern Jackson Co. He purchased 50 acres on the West Fork of Roaring River 10 Apr 1824. He purchased another 100 acres on Blackburn's Fork on 2 May 1827. He received Land Grant #2030 for 50 acres 13 Aug 1825 and Land Grant #851 for 100 acres on 15 Sep 1828. Joseph's sons also eventually bought land in the vicinity and this area became known as the Pippin Community. When Putnam Co was formed in 1845, some of the Pippin families became residents of Putnam.

Description of Land Grant #2030: On the waters of Blackburns fork of Roaring River and bounded as follows. By the 1830 Jackson Co Census, Joseph had married Margaret Dodson and started another family. They were also on the census for 1840 - at the time the eldest male was listed as age 70-80. Joseph was deceased by 1850 and Margaret, age 49, was head of household. In 1860 Margaret lived iwth her son Pinkney and in 1870 was in the home of her son-in-law James Lock. The ages are inconsistent in the censuses.

There is a memorial stone for Joseph Pippin at the Morgan Pippin Cemetery in Jackson Co TN; erected Oct 1998. It stands five feet tall and reads:
