SOLOMON PIPPIN

Solomon's wife was Amey as noted in the records of North Carolina. Her surname has not been found.

Bought 100 acres in Edgecombe County NC, 28 Oct 1766. It was located in Conetoe Pocosin, Edgecombe Co. He also received five land grants from the State of NC He had more than 800 acres of land. The items listed in his estate indicated he raised corn, flax & cotton and livestock to include hogs, sheep, cattle & horses; he had tools for blacksmithing.
He appears many times in the records of the Court of Please & Quarter Sessions for Edgecombe Co between 1766 & 1798. He served as road overseer, juror, grand juror, laying out of roads, etc.

Listed in DAR Index as having performed Patriotic Service in North Carolina during the American Revolution.
He was twice paid by the State of North Carolina for service rendered during the War.

He made an affidavit on 4 Jul 1777 relating to activities of the Loyalists & Tories in Edgecombe County - copy from "North Carolina Historial & Genealogical Register", Vol 2, No.3, July 1901..

Entry and order to the Surveyor dated 16 Feb 1782. The survey includes a plat. Begins at a gum in Allen Hardy's line, Batho'w. Kelleys Corner, along Kelley's line, another o flines to Spanish Oak in Thomas Newsom's line, by his line, Solomon Sessum's line; round Parson Cader Cjerry's line; Pippin's own line; Peter Knight's line; Allen Hardy's line. 1790 Edgecombe Co NC Census. (Ancestry.com digital online) Listed 1 male over 16 and 3 males under 16 and 4 females. 2 slaves. Also in the census were his sons Solomon Junr, Abraham, Joseph & Noah.

Solomon died intestate and Amy had to petition the Court for an allotment to provide for herself and the three children still at home, May 1798, Edgecombe Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions. Walter Knight, Grey Little & David Mayo laid off one year's provisions; Amy took a monetary allawance in lieu of the provisions. Amy & the three younger children made extensive purchases at the estate sale.

The Peition of your Petitioner - Amy Pippin humbly sheweth
That your Petitioners late husband Solomon Pippin departed this life, intestate, about three months ago leaving your Petitioner his widow & a family of children unprovided for. Your Petitioner there prays a Comission consisting of one justice & three freeholders to view the estate of the said Solomon and to allot & point out such part of the Crop stock & provisions as they may conceive necessary and adequate for the support of this Petitioner & family for one year & under their hands and seals return made according to the Act of Assembly in such cases made & provided for.
Agreeable to the annex'd Order we the Subcribers have proseeded to a lot and set off to Amey Pippen late widow of Solomon Pippen Deceas'd from May Court 1798 until May Court 1799 --
N.B. We have allow'd s'd widow twelve Hundred w't of pork and twenty Barrels of Corn Out of s'd Estate her and family Support. Given under our hands and seals this 23 of Jun 1798.

Son Joseph was administrator of estate and signed supplemental estate inventory on Nov 5, 1798. The youngest three children, Benajah, Happy & Clara chose guardians in the May 1798 Court session. Happy chose Samuel Reiner, Benajah & Clara chose their brother Noah.

Solomon had sold land to Solomon Junr in 1785 and Joseph in 1791. He sold his remaining lands to Noah, Elijah & Benajah in 1798, with the stipulation that ownership would not transfer until the deaths of he and his wife. The deeds were proven in court 24 Feb 1798, the same date that Joseph was appointed administrator. The estate was inventoried 5 Mar 1798 and the first sale was held Mar 12. An additional sale was held 16 Jun 1798, at which time the slaves were sold. The Feb Court of 1800 made distribution. Wife Amy, 11 children & Mary Newsom Pippin, widow of son Benjamin each received 66 pounds 18 shillings and 3 1/4 pence.

DISTRIBUTION OF SOLOMON PIPPEN'S ESTATE Agreeably to an order of Edgecombe County Court February Term 1800 to us directed as commissioners to divide the estate of Solomon Pippen dec'd between the lawful heirs and representatives of said dec'd, which we find to be thirteen in number to wit , Amy Pippen, the widow of the said dec'd Solomom Pippen, Abraham Pippen, Lucretia Pippen, Mary Pippen, Joseph Pippen, Noah Pippen, Rebecca Pippen, Olive Pippen, Elijah Pippen, Benajah Pippen, Happy Pippen & Clara Pippen- - - sons and daughters of said dec'd. We also find due said claimants the sum of 869.37.7 1/2, which we have divided between the foregoing claimants in the following manner :

In 1800 Amey Pippen was listed in Edgecombe Co with two females age 16-25 [Happy & Clary] and herself age, 45 or older. Benajah was on his own.
