Individual Details
John Pippin
(Abt 1730 - Abt 1800)
No Pippins are in the Queen Anne's Co MD Court records for the years 1764-1767. During this period most of the Pippin brothers left Maryland for North Carolina. The last record for John in Maryland was in 1763, the first entry in North Carolina was in 1774. John, Benjamin, Joseph & Solomon may have first settled in Halifax Co NC as stated by John's son Joseph in his application for a Revolutionary War persion. Only the brother Robert remained in Maryland. John next lived in Martin Co NC, formed from parts of Halifax & Tyrrell - it isn't known if he actually moved or just became incorporated by Martin Co in 1774.
On 9 Sep 1774 he bought 250 acres from John Williams, located in Conetoe Pocosin, Edgecombe Co. This was apparently near the Edgecombe/Martin county line as he continue to purchase land in Martin Co as well. He was on the Martin Co tax rolls in 1777 and 1779 but enumerated on the Edgecombe Co Census in 1790 and 1800.
In May of 1797, the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions stated a deed of gift from John Pippen to his daughter Susanna was proven by Isaac Hall. This deed has not been found and there's no other mention of this daughter.
There is no document after March of 1803 to verify that John Pippen was alive after that date. The Martin Co NC Courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1884 and no will or estate settlement now exists.
There may possibly have been another son of John & Elizabeth. there are scant records for a John Pippin who was on the 1810 Census in Darlington District SC. The 1790 census in Edgecombe Co shows the elder John with two males over 16, one of which would be John himself - his proved sons Joseph & Benjamin are listed elsewhere on this census. There are also records for a Sabary Pippin of Robeson Co NC who maight be the wife of this younger John. She bought land in Dec of 1815 in Robeson Co; she had one child, Joseph born about 1800. A Joseph Pippin is on the 1820 census in Darlington District SC; he married Martha Daniel.
