Ensign Joseph Pippin

Tarboro Free Press gives his age as 73 in 1827 which would make his birth year 1754


Served as Ensign from North Carolina in The American Revolution. He served in a regiment of the North Carolina line, commanded by Col. Shirlock. He was in Wilmington, Charleston, Augusta and Brier Creek where Gen. Ashe and Gen. Bryan commanded. He received his Ensign commission from one of those generals while he was in Duplin Co. He was in SC & GA with the same two officers. When he returned home, he was a recruiting officer under Col. Nathan Mayo, followed by service at Halifax as an Ensign under Capt. Ballard. His Pension application #W5546, states that he was born in county of Talbot, State of Maryland and brought to North Carolina at the age of 11 years & settlend at Halifax. He gave his age as 80 years. The application was dated 7 Jan 1832. Temperance Lee drew a widow's pension based on his service; it gives his date of death as 10 Apr 1833.


Joseph married Lucretia Knight and had five children: Nancy, Lydia, Luvina, Martha & Joseph John. Lucretia died circa 1825 and Joseph married Temperance, the widow of Jesse Leigh - they had no children. Temperance did name a son William C. Leigh in her will. She also had a daughter Lucy Leigh by her first husband; Lucy married Drewry Bryan.

15 Sep 1821, Joseph Pippin made a deed of gift of slaves to his daughter Elizabeth. When Joseph wrote his will, Elizabeth is not mentioned and one of the slaves was listed to be divided among daughters Lydia, Nancy & Martha.

Married by David Hopkins JP Henry Austin, bondsman. Ml. Hearn, witness. Also appeared in Tarboro Free Press 17 Feb 1827: Joe Pippen, officer of Revolution, age 73, to Mrs. Temperance Lee, age 43


Joseph wrote his will 14 Sep 1827; proven May Court of 1833. Named in the will were wife Temperance, daughters Lydia Austin, Martha Porter and Nancy Ward; Nancy Ward's daughter Harriett Mayo; daughter Luvina Spellings, son Joseph John Pippin, grandson William S. Bryan [actually a step-grandson, grandson of Temperance by her 1st husband].
