Joseph John Pippin
(1 Sep 1796 - 24 Oct 1853)
Record says "son of Ensign Joseph Pippen of the Revolutionary War"
Joseph John was a merchant of Tarboro, NC, a Justice of the Peace, a member of the NC General Assembly, and a Deacon in the Cross Roads Baptist Church of Tarboro. In 1827 the Columbia Academy was established on his lands and he was one of the founders and incorporators..
The family was enumerated 1820, 1840 & 1850 in Edgecombe Co. In 1860, his widow Talitha was head of houshold.
1850 Census. Edgecombe, NC, Hh 597
Jos. J. Pippen 53. Tolitha 52
Nancy J. 24. Jno W. 21 W M. 20, male, Joseph H. 18 Jas. S. 15. Flaveus A., male, 12. Cullen A. 10. Nathan A. 7. Tolitha M. age 5.
Joseph wrote his will 18 Jul 1852; proved Nov 1853. He named all of his thirteen children in his will. His estate included some 2000 acres of land, $5,790 in cash, slaves valued at $11,000. He died 24 Oct 1853. Both Joseph John & Talitha are buried at the Pippin Family Graveyard in Edgecombe Co.
The children were Bethinea, Catherine, Henry, Nancy, Elizabeth, John, William, Joseph, James, Flavius, Cullen, Nathan & Talitha. Some of the birth dates given here I find doubtful - the two older daughters, born 1812 and 1816 in particular - I very much suspect they were born perhaps 1822 and 1826.
It would seem this family paid a terrible price during the Civil War.
