Individual Details

John William Pippin

(25 Sep 1828 - 2 Apr 1880)

John inherited 550 acres of farmland in Edgecombe when his father died in 1853 (the John Barlow tract) and he resided there, never marrying. The farm was productive, and he was a wealthy planter both before and after the Civil War.

When war broke out, he and 5 of his brothers enlisted with the Confederate States Army. John enlisted at age 33 on May 24, 1862, serving as a private with Company I of the NC 15th Regiment (originally the 5th NC Volunteers), which was made up primarily of Edgecombe County men, and from all indications, remained in service throughout the war.

He returned home to his farm in Edgecombe, where sadly, he died from alcoholism on April 2, 1880 at age 51.
