Elijah Pippin

Elijah & Amy Cook were married before March, 1799. He married (2) Spicey Cherry about 1813. Amy was the daughter of John Cook - his will dated 3 Mar 1799 named her as Amy Pipen. Spicey was the daughter of Levi & Sally Cherry. In 1826 Elijah & Spicey inhertied property from the estate of her father, Levi Cherry. Spicey was also one of the ten heirs of her mother Sally Cherry in December of 1835.

Known children of Elijah and Amy were Nazareth, Elisha, Levi, Solomon and Kinchen. They were young children when their mother died. Spicey was in her late 30's when she married Elijah and they had two more children, Silas & Spicey. All the children were born in Edgecombe Co NC.

Elijah purchased 432 acres in Conetoe Pocosin from his father Solomon. It was the homestead where Solomon was living and was not to transfer to Elijah until his parents both died.

In 1798, Elijah's sister Happy chose Samuel Reiner as her guardian after their father had died. At the Feb Court 1800, she requested that Elijah Pippin fulfil that duty.

27 Aug 1804, Elijah's brother Joseph, as administrator of their father Solomon's estate, had a warrant issued for the arrest of Amy & Elijah unless they render to him 130£ owed to the estate.

Nov Court 1827. Spicey Pippin petitioned the court to grant a writ of dower because of the death of her husband who had died intestate.

CD #314, 1820 Census, lists Elijah Pippen in Edgecombe County, NC. He also appeared in the 1810 Census of Edgecombe County. By 1830, Spicey was counted as a widow with a daughter, probably the daughter Spicey, in her household. She was counted in 1840 and twice in 1850. She was listed as age 70, in the household of Margaret Hardy, age 45, in Edgecombe Co and also in Pitt Co, NC, age 70, in the household of James Mayo, her son-in-law.

10 Jun 1852, Spicey Pippin made out a deed of gift to her grandchildren, James Allen Mayo and Martha Elizabeth Mayo, children of James & Spicey Mayo. The deeds states they were her nephew & niece but this was an error.

Spicey Pippin wrote her will 2 Nov 1849; it was proven in Edgecombe Co Court Aug Term 1853.
