Kinchen Pippin

Kinchen is said to have come to Jackson Co TN about 1808 with his parents.

30 Nov 1813, Kinchen bought 10 acres on the east side of Roaring River near the home of John Finn. His first wife is believed to be a Finn but her given name had not been found. Future land purchases were located on both Flynn's Creek & Martin's Creek.

Taken up by Kenchen Pippin living on Martins Crk, one cow 4 years old. Appraised $7.

1820 Census shows Kinchen as age 16-26; spouse is the same age. 2 girls under age 10 [Elizabeth & Sallie] The subsequent censuses show that he had nine children by the 1st wife and seven by Pollie. They have all been identified.

1824 - 5 acres, Bk CC, p.637 Grant #21326 By virtue of part of Certificate #1360 dated 9 Jan 1813 issued to Robert Coman for 240 acres, entered 2nd Dec 1815. Granted to Kinchen Pippen assignee of the said Robert Coman, Five acres by survey dated 4 Apr 1817 in the first district in Jackson County on waters of Martin's Creek. Including the house and improvement whereon said Pippen now lives. Dated 2 Feb 1824. Recorded 15 Aug 1827.
1827 - 10 acres, Bk CC, p.831 Grant #25578. By virtue of part of Certificate #865 dated 30 Jan 1812 issued to William T. Lewis for 500 acres and entered 30 Nov 1813. Granted to Kinchen Pippin assignee of said William T. Lewis, Ten acres by survey dated 25 May 1814 in the first District in Jackson County on the east side of Roaring River. Including the improvement where John Finn formerly lived. Dated 13 Dec 1827. Recorded 22 Feb 1828.


1850 Census, Kinchen is 60, wife Polly 20, Bird (son from 1st marriage) age 15. This is the first census in which Pollie appears. The 1st wife died sometime after 6 Dec 1844 and before he married Polly.

Kinchen age 64, b. NC. Polly age 35, b. TN. Harry [Harve] age 6. Hogan age 5. Ann age 3. and Mary age 1.

By 1870, Pollie was head of household and gave her name as "Berry". She reappeared as Pollie Pippin in 1880.

The death certificate of Simeon Pippin (1832-1915) erroneously shows his parents as Kinch Pippin and Eliza Bohannon. He was the son of Henry Pippin and Elizabeth Lawson. This has led to Eliza as being listed a third wife of Kinchen. See page 267 of "Pippin Pathways"
