Byrd K. "Bird" Pippin
(16 Dec 1844 - 1903)
Found in 1850 Census with Kinchen and young wife Polly. He was age 15, born about 1835.
In 1860, Bird was in Warren Co MS, employed as an overseer. He enlisted as a private in Company H, 21st MS Infantry Regt, Confederate, in Warren Co on 16 Jul 1861. In 1863 he participated in the Battle of Chickamauga where Bird was captured by Union forces, treated as a prison of war & confined at Camp Cahse Ohio until 13 Dec 1864. He was allowed to proceed home because (1) he had taken the oath and (2) Jackson Co TN was under the control of the Union.
His middle name was probably Kinchen after his father. He was back in TN in 1865 because he enlisted on 30 Mar 1865 as a private in Company C, 8th TN Mounted Infantry, Union for one year. He was discharged at Nashville on 17 Aug 1865.
"My father Byrd Pippin moved to Illinois at the end of the Civil war - 1866. Was a Confederate soldier under General Longstreet; an overseer of Negroes in LA when the war broke out." From a letter dated 11 Aug 1939, by William H. Pippin of Newton, IL.
Bird married (1) Mary Jane Kilbourn on 30 May 1867 in Jasper Co IL. They had two sons, William and John. Mary Jane died in 1875. Bird married (2) Marth Ann Hutson on 24 Jan 1876 and they had three children, Myrtle, Rebecca & Lee. They are on the 1880 census in Jasper Co IL. Martha died 1893.
Bird, both wives, and all the children except Rebecca are buried Aten Cemetery, Jasper Co IL.
The record of Bird's birth is inconsistent. The 1880 census gives his age as 36 & a son said he was born 16 Dec 1844. However the 1850 census showed Bird already to be age 15 and his enlistment in 1861 he was age 24. A birth year of 1835/1836 is much more consistent with the ages of siblings as well.
