Hogan "Hoge" Pippin

(Abt 1855 - 20 Sep 1908)

At May Term, 1881, of the Circuit Court in Jackson Co, Polly Pippin, alias Polly Berry, made a statement at the trial of her son Hogan Pippin.
The grand jury found that Hogan Pippin had assaulted John H. Chaffin with a gun and pistol on 21 Apr 1881. Hogan pleaded not guilty to the charges, claiming he was visiting his cousin, Willis Pippin, in Warren Co KY at the time. Statements from Warren Co were presented but refused as insufficient - they were not taken in the circuit clerk's office and the oaths were not endorsed. Hogan also claimed that he had stayed with Nude Pippin [William "Nude" Pippin, son of Thomas Pippin] in Allen Co KY on his way to Tennessee. John W. Long stated that it would be difficult to tell Harve & Hogan Pippin apart at 40 or 50 yards, but closer observation would show that Harve was cross-eyed. Polly Pippin made a statement that she was the defendant's mother - he left her house the 2nd week of the Circuit Court in 1881 and came back the last March. He was not in the county on Feb 21st when the incident took place as she did his cooking and washing and would know.

Polly Pippin's statement was endorsed by W. W. Williams, Clerk of the Chancery Court as follows:
"I know the charactor of Polly Pippin it is bad she is not entitled to credit on her oath in a court of Justice"
Four other witnesses testified to her character and had the same opinion.

The record does not show a sentence but there is a reimbursement to the sheriff for transporting Hogan Pippin to the Nashville jail.

Hoge was married to (1) Celia Brewington about 1877 in Madison Co MO. They apparently had a daughter Mary Ann born about 1878.

On 2 Sep 1881, in Madison Co MO, Cecilia Pippin filed for divorce from "Logan" Pippin because of desertion. He had absented himself about 1 Oct 1878 and had not returned. Logan never appeared, probably because he was in Tennessee, and the divorce was granted.

Death Certificate of Hogan Pippin states that he died of heart trouble. He died in Baxter, Putnam Co TN.
