Mary "Pollie" Berry

(Abt 1829 - )

PIPPIN FAMILY NEWS article states that in 1860, Pollie was head of household, Kinchen having died. This is incorrect. Kinchen was still living in 1860, the census gave his age as 65 [which is incorrect] born NC. Polly's age stated as 35. The family was enumerated in 1870 in Jackson Co with the surname Berry and with Pollie as head of household, age 37.. In 1880, they were again listed as Pippins and Pollie gives her age as 45. She was 20 in 1850, so she was apparently born sometime between 1830 and 1835.

1870, Jackson Co TN Census.
Pollie Berry, age 37, keeping house, b. TN, cannot read or write.
Harry, age 18, Hogan age 16, Martha 14 [apparently Ann from 1860], Lucy age 12, Sina age 10, Kinch age 4.

1880. Pollie Pippin, age 45, b. TN. Lucy age 19. Siney age 17. Kinchen age 15. And Robbert, a grandson, age 3, possibly a child of Lucy's?

At May Term, 1881, of the Circuit Court in Jackson Co, Polly Pippin, alias Polly Berry, made a statement at the trial of her son Hogan Pippin.
Polly Pippin's statement was endorsed by W. W. Williams, Clerk of the Chancery Court as follows:
"I know the charactor of Polly Pippin it is bad she is not entitled to credit on her oath in a court of Justice"
Four other witnesses testified to her character and had the same opinion.
