Harvey "Harve" Pippin

(Abt 1854 - Abt 1908)

Harve Pippin stood trial for highway robbery, Circuit Court, January Term, 1881. The trial was covered in the GAINESBORO SENTINEL, Gainesboro TN. William Berry was released from prison, pardoned by the governor and brought into court to testify against Harv Pippin. William had previously been convicted of highway robbery.

1 Nov 1880, a grand jury for Jackson Co TN found that on 1 Nov 1880, William Berry robbed John Pippin of $65. The money was the property of Richard Freelon Pippin, John's father. William Berry was tried, sentenced for 10 years & sent to the state penitentiary in Nashville.
The newspaper report above in January of 1881, stated that Berry's citizenship had been restored and he had been brought up to testify against his confederate, Harv Pippin. [They were not only confederates in robbery, but also first cousins.] Apparently Harve planned the robbery & hired Berry to carry it out. Harv was then sentenced to ten years.

Harve was married twice, (1) to Delia Davis, 31 Jul 1898, Hamilton Co, TN, and (2) to Mary (although I find no record of a Mary). The surname for either is not known. Harve is on the 1900 Census in Hamilton Co TN. He was 45, b. Mar 1855, married for 2 years. Delia, wife, b. Nov 1880, age 20, 2 children - neither one living.

There are other conflicting records concerning a Harvey/Harry Pippin.
He seems to have been younger in subsequent years - perhaps he did not want his second wife to know all of his history.
