Howell settled near where the French had maintained a smithy for the Indian farmers. The government maintained the smithy after the French ceded the Northwest Territy - Howell Pippin is the last recorded blacksmith to operate the smithy.

1 Dec 1857 He received a land patent after death - it would have course gone to his heirs. Howel Pipen, of Chariton Co, MO. Land office at Fayette. NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 6, Township 56, Range 17. Subject to sale at Fayette, now Milan, MO. 40 acres.
