Christian Estensen Pederson
(15 Jan 1885 - 1 Jun 1948)
Obituary from the Hendricks Pioneer:
Pederson Funeral was held Friday
Funeral services were held here Friday afternoon, June 4, for Christ Pederson, to whom death had come early Tuesday morning of last week.
A brief service at the home preceded last rites at the Lutheran Free Church. Rev. M. A. Ericksen officiated. Musical numbers were furnished by Mrs. M. A. Ericksen, who sang at the home, and by the male quartette at the church.
The pallbearers were P. P. Sagmoe, Jr., Adolph Trooien, Nathan Thoreson, Nels Digre, Eddie Ronning and Theodore Mathison. Interment was in the East Cemetery.
Christ Pederson was born on January 15, 1885, in Hendricks township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Esten Pederson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a life long member of the Lutheran Free church.
He was united in marriage on March 23, 1911, to Anna Thoreson. They were the parents of seven children, one of whom preceded her father in death.
Those who survive are the widow, three sons, Eddie, Nels and Alvin, and three daughters, Mrs. Alfred Skovly, Clara and Hilda. Other survivors are two brothers, Lars Digre and P.P. Sagmoe, Sr., and one sister, Mrs. Nels Ronning, in addition to six grandchildren.
A resident of this community his entire lifetime, Mr. Pederson had been engaged in farming until he moved into Hendricks last fall. He had been a patient at the local hospital for about three weeks prior to his death.
(End of obituary)
Christian was a kind, gentle, quiet man, who was a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren, in addition to being a good husband and father. We remember him laying on the floor and playing with us, letting us comb and "style" his hair, and just totally loving us.
He gave free haircuts about every Sunday afternoon. The relatives and neighbors would come and ask him to cut their hair, but didn't think about giving him something for doing it, though times were tough for him and his family, too, and besides the free haircuts, grandma always baked a couple cakes in addition to other things for lunch. Providing for his family was so stressful that sometimes he would literally get sick and have to go to bed. In addition to his wife and children, he was the provider, and grandma, the cook and housekeeper for his parents and brother, John, who did not marry, and continued to live there on the farm. My mother, Beulah Pederson Skovly, said since there was so much work to be done, her mother, and my grandmother, Anna, only got to her parents place to see them about once a year, and it was only across the section to their farm.
Anna was a mid-wife, too, and got calls to help out neighboring women. Once, when she was gone, my mother, being the oldest daughter, was going to bake bread. She thought the recipe said a cup of salt, but what it actually said, in Norwegian, was a pinch of salt. (The children learned to speak, but not read, the Norwegian language.) Guess the bread wasn't fit to eat. We all have those funny stories, though. (BAJ)
