To Linda Schwartz, 10 Feb, 2005,
Here is the obituary for Anna Larsdatter Engesrønning. She was the sister
to my great-grandmother, Gollaug Larsdatter Engesrønning.
Anna Larsdatter Engen Pederson was born in Singsaas Sogn, Holtaaler
Prestegjold, Norway, on January 24, 1838, thus being at the time of her
death, 88 years, three months, and 29 days of age.
On November 1872, she was united in marriage to Esten Pederson Digre. In
the year 1885, the family migrated to America and arrived at Canby, Minn.,
in the spring of the same year. They settled permanently on a farm a few
miles east of Hendricks which is their present home.
The deceased had been in ill health for many years and had been bedridden
for the past five years. She passed peacefully away on Sunday, May 23.
Funeral services were held in the Lutheran Free church east of
Hendricks. Rev. E.L. Erickson, officiating. Interment was made in the
east cemetery.
Besides the sorrowing husband, Mrs. Pederson is survived by four sons,
Peder Sagmoe, Lars Digre, John Pederson (Digre) and Christian Pederson, and
one daughter, Mrs. Nils Ronning. A daughter Beret, died at the age of 8,
and two sons, Lars, who died in infancy, and Peder, at the age of 15,
preceded their mother in death. Besides these are left a large number of
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Christian Pederson, Lars Digre, John Pederson, Peder P.
Sagmoe, Theodore Thoreson and Nils Ronning.
The family has the united sympathy of the entire community, who mourn with
them the loss of another staunch and worthy pioneer.

Comments by Beverly Skovly Johnson:
I believe the most profound thing that has happened to me in my research for this book is the realization that the Peder, mentioned in the obituary for his mother, Anne, above, almost certainly is buried in the East Cemetery by Hendricks, MN. His name is in the list of Emigrants from Trondheim for 1867-1930, but I did not know what happened to him, as I don't remember my family ever mentioning him, and they did talk about ancestors. Then I realized that in Anne's Memory Book, which I inherited, and which was made when she died, is a page titled Memoranda, that has Peter E. Digre's name, along with her son, John E. Pederson and her husband, Esten D. Pederson’s names. I know that John and Esten died before she did, so I assume these 3 were close family who had already died In the Emigrants List, he is shown as being 8 years old when the family left Norway, and the old Singsaas Boka says he was 15 when he died, (so they must have had communication with family in America) and Anne's memory book says his death date was 26 Mar 1889, which would have made him 13 years old when he died.
The old church records for the Lutheran Free Church (now in the possession of Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks) show a Peder E. Digre, age 13, who died 26 Mar.1889, born in Norway and died at Hendricks. The burials list does not include parents, but I feel quite certain this is the same Peder. The people who wrote the Singsaas Boka may easily have gotten the age wrong. If he was 8 when they came here, he would have been born in 1876, and since he died in 1889, he would have been 13 years old then, which agrees with the church records.
The only other mention I have found is in a book titled "On Our Journey Back" edited by Mayme Nygaard, copyrighted in 1989. Bowena Prevo Ronning wrote an article for that book, and she mentioned that Esten and Annie had a son, Peder, who died and was buried in the small cemetery 1-1/2 miles north of Hendricks, (before there was even a town), on what was then the Henrik Eggen farm. Some of the graves were moved, so it's possible if he was buried there originally, that the family had his body moved to the East Cemetery when that was established. Since his death and burial were recorded in the Lutheran Free Church books, they were associated with that church and the cemetery is located only about a mile from the Pederson home place, so it's logical they would have wanted him closer, and in the church cemetery.
If someone can prove this is not our Peder, which I believe he is, I feel so sad that we have not been honoring him along with our other family members who have died, so, from now on, we will visit his grave, also.
