Early-Day Pioneer Laid to Rest

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, August 5, for P. P. Sagmoe, Sr., early-day and long-time resident of the Hendricks community. Rev. Peder Lerseth officiated at a service at the Sagmoe home at 1:30 and at the last rites at the First Lutheran church at two o'clock. Musical numbers consisted of a vocal solo in the Norwegian language at the home by Miss CarolineGulbraa, and of two quartette numbers, a vocal trio, and a vocal solo at the church.

Pallbearers were six grandsons of the deceased: Parnell, Kenneth, Clayton and LeRoy Sagmoe, and Lewellyn and Gordon Friestad. Interment was at the East cemetery beside the remains of his widow and daughter.

P.P. Sagmoe, Sr. was born in Singsaas, Norway, on February 13, 1861. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith there, and lived in his native country until at the age of 19, when he came to America. The group with which he was traveling arrived in New York early in June 1880, and came to Canby shortly after. From there Mr. Sagmoe came to the Hendricks area.

On November 15, 1883, he was united in marriage to Gullaug Swenson. They established their home on a farm located five miles east and one half mile south of Hendricks. Here Mr. Sagmoe built at first a sod home, at the same time breaking the virgin soil for cultivation. For several years, in order to supplement the income from the farm, he would go to northern Minnesota and take employment in the logging camps during the winter months. In 1892, Mr. Sagmoe sold the original farm and purchased another about two miles farther west. Here they lived until in May, 1922, when they moved to Hendricks to make their home. In November, 1933, they observed their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Sagmoe suffered a stroke on the following March 1, and passed away a few days later. From that time until 1940, Mr. Sagmoe resided with Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Sagmoe, and from 1940 until his passing, he had lived with Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Eggen.

He is survived by six children: Peter, Mrs. P.C. Hinsverk, Albert, Mrs. Anton Friestad, Mrs. Theo. Eggen and Lowell, all of the Hendricks community. Other survivors are 20 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. In addition to Mrs. Sagmoe, he was preceded in death by one son, Eddie, who passed away nearly one year ago, August 23, 1949, and one daughter, Randena, who passed away in 1895, when a child of four.

The deceased, in his earlier years, held several township and school board positions. He was active in the work of the church for many years, serving as a teacher in the Sunday School for 34 years, also serving as Sunday School superintendent for a 10 year period. He had served as deacon of First Lutheran church since its founding in 1930, and prior to that time had been an officer of ther cngregations (as printed, BAJ). A few years ago he was elected honorary deacon for life at First Lutheran.

Mr. Sagmoe had always lived an out and out Christian life, and had witnessed many times for his God. For the past many years, he had made it an almost daily practice to visit the sick at the Hendricks hospital. He brought much comfort to those who were ill there. He had been about town daily until the day of his passing on Tuesday, August 2, (1949), at the Hendricks hospital, he having entered the hospital that morning.
