Al Hawkinson, Prominent Businessman Dies Suddenly While Ice Fishing
John Alfred (Al Hawkinson), 71, prominent Jordan businessman, and town official, was fatally stricken with a heart attach early Saturday afternoon while ice fishing on a reservoir near Jordan.
Mr. Hawkinson and a companion, Emanuel Sturtz, left Jordan Saturday morning to ice fish on the Engdahl Reservoir 19 miles northwest of Jordan. Sturtz left Hawkinson for a short time and later found Hawkinson collapsed at one of the
fishing holes when he returned. Coroner Chet Wilson attributed death to a heart attack.
Mr. Hawkinson was born Aug. 18, 1892 in Harris, Minnesota. He married Minnie Carlson in 1916. The couple homesteaded northwest of Jordan in the Snow Creek area where they were engaged in ranching until 1936, when they moved to Jordan. He operated the AAA office here for a period of two years. In 1939 he opened an insurance and accounting office in Jordan, and later purchased the Garfield Abstract business in 1947, which is now operating as the Garfield Title and Insurance Company.
Mrs. Hawkinson died in 1951 and in 1952 Mr. Hawkinson was united in marriage to Mrs. Lea Morgan. He was a member of the Miles City Elks Lodge, a director of the Garfield County Commercial Club, Jordan Lion's Club and has served with distinction as City Clerk of Jordan for several years. He was elected to the office of Public Administrator on the Democratic ticket and has been in that office for 20 years. Mr. Hawkinson was also an ardent fisherman and a lover of wildlife. He planted the Bob White Quail and Squirrels in this area and took great pride in his hobby of feeding them and watching them in their daily habits. He contributed much of his time to those things which were an improvement to the town of Jordan.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Lea, are a son, Woodrow, of Circle, Montana; and a daughter, Mrs. Jack Valencia of California, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church in Jordan, with the Rev. John B. Fitz of Miles City officiating.
In duet, Mrs. Vaughn Newland and Miss Verna Schmidt sang, accompanied by Mrs. Laura Patterson at the organ. Pallbearers were: J.E. Stanton, Leo Morgan, Don Woolhiser, William Stanton, Ed Morgan and Elmer Hawkinson. Interment was in the family plot at Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan under the direction of Stevenson's Miles City funeral home.
