Letter from Verna, who was then living in Aptos CA, to Art in June 1985
I attended elementary school at Snow Creek and high school in Jordan, Montana graduating in 1939 as class valedictorian at the same time as Woody. However, Woody was salutatorian, after only three years in high
school. He helped out on the ranch for a few years before entering high school. In San Francisco I concurrently worked and attended extensive nighttime college classes in accounting and insurance.
Biggest asset acquired in Jordan (thanks to commercial teacher Dorothy Kruger) was to be able to take meeting minutes, directors' proceedings, electronic discussions, etc, verbatim.
I retired in 1978 as Confidential Legal Secretary to City Attorney of Palo Alto, following 39 years of secretarial work and payroll jobs with various county (3 years for County Agricultural Agent-Jordan), state (Montana), federal
(War Manpower Commission, U.S. Public Roads Administration and U.S. Army Ord. Corps), city (Palo Alto), and private entities (E.W. Elliott Construction Co., Kingwell Bros. Ltd., Dallman, Lenkurt Electric-now GTE). Spent most of World
War II in Whitehorse, Y.T., Canada as payroll manager for a Seattle contractor during construction of Alaska Highway, after which was subsequently assigned in 1946 to San Francisco with this firm. Moved 33 times in 3 years at convenience and expense of Uncle Sam and his contractor. Co-owner and operator (after office hours) of a laundromat in San Francisco for three years. Last 20 years of employment were spent with City of Palo Alto as Assistant City Clerk and Secretary to the City Attorney.
My hobbies are gardening, cooking and reading (used to bre sewing). Presently, secretary to private road association (110 properties) and secretary to my chapter (600 plus members) of Retired Public Employees of the State of California. No time for housework.
