Death
Francis Conrad Furr Mr. Furr, a native Charlottean and resident of Lake Wylie, SC for the past 26 years, passed away peacefully on April 26th, 2009, surrounded by his family. Conrad was born February 23, 1919 to the late Beecham Z. and Carrie E. Black Furr. Conrad was a graduate of Central High School and Veteran of the Army Air Force where he served as a Staff Sergeant and received the EAME Campaign medal and 5 Bronze Service Stars. He was founder of Furr's Nursery located on Wilkinson Boulevard for many years and a charter member of the men's Camellia Club. During his active years in Charlotte, Conrad was a member of Myers Park Country Club, Tar Heel Seniors Golf Assoc., Past Chairman of Charlotte Chapter order of DeMolay, master of Keystone Lodge #726, member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, NC Grand York Bodies, Oasis Temple and Royal Order of Jesters. Conrad was a long standing member of Calvary United Methodist Church having served on the Board of Stewards, Chairman of Missions and Past President of United Methodist Men and member of the Sam Hinson SS class. Conrad had an outgoing and friendly personality that made you feel comfortable and put you at ease. While in his late 50's, Conrad joined the Skibees Association and taught his children how to snow ski. During a trip to Cancun, Mexico, he was the only one to Parasail and to catch, not 1 but 2 sail fish. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest every day. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Suzanne; daughter, Helen Padida and husband Tom of Charlotte; three sons, Jerry Furr of Charlotte, Patrick 'Pat' and wife Tanya Furr of Mint Hill, and Michael 'Mike' and wife Teresa of Mint Hill; 6 grandchildren, Bartley and Kevin Liles, Cortney and Scott Furr, and Victoria 'Tori' and Harley Furr. Funeral services to celebrate Conrad's life will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, on Wednesday, April 29th at 2 p.m. As per his wishes, he will be cremated. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall. The family wishes to give special thanks to John Correll and Leigh Jeffries for their friendship and many acts of kindness shared with Conrad. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary United Methodist Church, 512 West Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.
