Memo from Philena Murphy says that Ida was born in Tulare County.Mortuary shows birthplace as Milo, CA. I remember hearing that she was born at Hobo Hot Springs, which is in Kern County, however I will go with the two sources that say Tulare County.
She wasn't listed in the 1880 census with her father's family. Both the 1900 census and her death certificate show her born Sept., 1879. Memo from Philena Murphy dated Jun 1899 shows her born 14 Sep 1881.That is more likely for two reasons: it would explain why she wasn't shown in the census and it would put two years between her and the previous child instead of only ten months.
Death certificate #1070 filed 14 Nov 1947 provides birth date of 14 Sep 1879 in California and parents names as O.S. McCoy born California and Maggie Coyier born Canada. She was a widow at the time of her death. Death cert says she had lived in community (rural Tulare) for 68 years. No occupation.
Funeral record from Brooks Chapel states that Ida had resided at 320 N.E. 4th Avenue, Visalia, Tulare Co., CA. She was divorced and husband's name was Albert Welch. Lists as relatives Everett O. Duncan, son, and Mrs. Will Worthly (Lily), sister. Total cost of funeral was $530.53 plus $15.45 for flowers, paid $80 by her own cash and $465.98"by cash". She was listed as a housewife. Copy in possession of the author.
Cousin Ethel Pratt Brown remembers that Ida had red hair. She ran off and left husband and children when they were young. Barbara Fridlund said she left because Ray beat her. Everett would never talk about his mother.
A letter from Sharon Joe to Ethel Brown, speaking of Ida, says: "a woman who I now believe was she came to visit my grandmother as a young girl, but was not permitted in the house, the words "painted hussy" being included in the scenario." In a conversation with Sharon in 1999, she indicated that she understood from family that Ida had turned to prostitution and was a madam.
According to marriage records, she was married to Louis Moynier 1 Nov.1919 in Bakersfield and to Albert Welsch 31 Jan 1920 in Kings County stating that her name was Ida Thomas. That's only 3 months between marriages, so there was no time for a divorce. Neither a divorce nor an annulment was found by the clerk of the court in Kern County.
Bobbie Duncan Fridlund on her meeting with Ida McCoy Duncan:
"My remembrance of Ida----She came to our place in Success Valley with an attendant with her. She never went in the house. I was called outside to see her. She had a wistful quality about her. She brought me a present. Two jumpsuit type outfits, one blue and white check and one brown and white check. I'm assuming she must have been in some sort of care facility because the nurse type with her was definitely in charge.
Evidently really impressed me."
This meeting occurred when Bobbie was about 6, she thought.
