Lemore (Lee) MCCOY
(4 Nov 1879 - 30 Oct 1892)
Tulare Daily Evening Register, 2 Nov 1892 had this article: "An orphan boy named Lee McCoy, aged 16 years, and who made his home with Henry Murphy at Milo, on the Upper Tule, accidentally shot himself while out hunting last Saturday and died Sunday morning at four o'clock. He was found several hours after the accident occurred and was so weak from loss of blood that he could not give a clear statement of how he happened to shoot himself. The charge took effect in his arm and it seems that if proper care had been used when he was found that the boy might have lived. The wound was not bandaged as it should have been and the boy bled to death. He was an honorable, hard working fellow."
On 10 Nov. 1892, the same newspaper carried this letter and headed "A Correction". "I beg leave to make a correction of a communnication which appeared in your paper Nov. 4th in regard to the death of Lee McCoy. It is incorrect in every particular excepting that he accidentally shot himself in his left arm while out hunting Saturday evening, Oct. 29th, and his weakness from loss of blood. Had he lived he would have been fourteen years old the 4th of November, 1892. He died Sunday morning, Oct. 30th, at 1:40 o'clock. He was not found as stated, but came to the house half an hour after the report of the gun was heard, and was so weak from loss of blood that he could not tell how it happened. Doctors were immediately sent for, the wound was bandaged, restoratives administered and the hemorrhage checked, but he was too weak to rally. Everything was done for the boy that could possibly be done, but to no avail. Signed Henry Murphy. Milo, Nov.7th, 1892".
Patricia Lee Brown, Grand-daughter of Lillie Belle McCoy, has Lee's name as Lemore. The memo from Philena Murphy gives Lee's birth year as 1878, but her memo was dated 1899. I am using the date given by Henry in the letter to the newspaper in 1892.
