Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Hadley chapel here for James Walter McCoy, member of a pioneer San Joaquin valley family who was found dead at his home at the Van Cleve pipe yard New Year's morning. He would have been 82 today.

Mr. McCoy was born in 1878 in Stanislaus county. The next year his father, Oliver S. McCoy, and several of his uncles moved their families to Kings county and acquired the Water Witch, a sailboat which had been brought into Tulare lake. With it they caught terrapin for shipment to San Francisco and they also hunted wild ducks and geese commercially. Oliver McCoy was killed by an Indian near Kernville in 1893 while assisting a deputy sheriff who had gone to an Indian camp to arrest one of its occupants for burning a haystack.
Walter McCoy came to Exeter about 40 years ago and for more than 30 years was employed at the Van Cleve pipe yard, retiring about eight years ago.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Veda McCoy, of Monterey, and the following nieces and nephews: Zylpha McCoy of Monterey, Oliver McCoy, Lee Worthley, and LaWayne Miller of Visalia; Everett Duncan of Porterville, and two nieces and a nephew who live in Ventura."
