A letter from Sharon Joe to Ethel Brown says that Inez died as Elza was taking her from the mountains to the hospital, possibly with her third child. Elza took it very hard, "maybe even going off the deep end." He left the body with Ray Duncan, who buried Inez. Elza gave his children away to be raised by other non-family members. Laverne to the Wilson and Lyle to the Fees family.
