Death
STANLEY — Mr. Olen DeWitt Furr, 78, of 212 Rollingwood Dr. died July 28, 1992, at Rome. Funeral is 11 am. Friday at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill, with the Rev. Norman Hull-Ryde officiating. Visitation is from 7 to 9 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home. Mr. Furr, a retired carpenter with Duke Power Co., was born in Union County, son of the late Fulton and Miranda Yandel Furr. He was preceded in death by his daughter Mrs. Patricia Reece. He was a Navy veteran who served in World War II. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Ward Furr; son, Olen Furr Jr. of Charlotte; daughter, Mrs. Deborah Warlick; brothers, Henry Furr of Charlotte, Wade Furr of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Max Furr of Monroe, Don Furr of Indian Trail; sisters, Mrs. Edith Bailey of Canadys, S.C., Mrs. Mildred Rushing of Marshville; three grandchildren. USS Kennebec (AO-36)Olen D. Furr, AS Aboard 1942. Enlisted 12/11/41 in Raleigh, NC.
You will not believe this but my father Olen D. Furr was on the USA Calayhan one of the destroyers that protected the Indianapolis. After she completed her mission the Destroyers left her on their way to Letye I hope I got that right The Calayhan was struck by a Japanese plane it was sunk July 28 1946. My Dad treated water for 24 hours there were over 60 men that went down with the ship. He survived.
