Individual Details

Adam McDonald FURR

(4 Dec 1840 - 2 Jul 1931)

According to two of his descendants (Thomas M. Smith, Jr. and John B. Hagler, August 1995), he was wounded in the thigh at Gettysburg and likely returned to North Carolina shortly thereafter since he married on January 30, 1864. Adam's wound never fully healed and had to be dressed each morning. He was only about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and wore a goatee. He was kind to everyone he came into contact with and settled the estates of several neighbors. He was not rich in worldly possessions and probably would be classified as a poor "dirt" farmer. He died at home after a short illness and was buried next to his first wife.
