Had seven children by her first marriage and was expecting the eighth when her husband caught a cold that developed into double pneumonia and died. Both Mary Laura and John were staunch Baptist. In 1900, she got a neighbor who had a covered wagon to move the family to Concord, NC where she found a furnished house. She took in mill hands, fed them, packed their lunches, and mended their clothes as a means of income. This was back in the days of child labor in the cotton mills. She was very interested in seeing that her children were given as much education as they could get. One of Adam Furr's sons was a school teacher. He introduced his father to the widow Shelton. After they married, they lived on his farm on Rocky River near Hagler's Ford per the maps of the late 18th and early 19th century. Adam's house, which he built in 1865, is still standing.

The Sunday before December 4th was a day of celebration by all the Furr and Skelton families to honor their parents who had the same birth dates. Both Mary Laura and Adam were loyal members of their respective churches. However, after they married, they would attend Mary Laura's Baptist church one Sunday and Adam's Methodist church the next. When neither church had services, they would attend Saint Martin's Lutheran Church, which was a short walk down the road.
