Elmer Eugene Putnam
An Appreciation.
Once again we mourn the passing of a fellow townsman, a pioneer merchant and postmaster, a good citizen and loyal friend. Many were the kindnesses shown others by him that never came to public notice. We cherish in our hearts the memory of this splendid man. It will be a long day before our community will forget him. Here he spent the sunshine of his youth and passed on in life's sunset among his family and friends whom he loved so much. He did a father's duty nobly. He has passed on to enjoy the reward of a life well spent on earth. Over in the beautiful land where he is free from all earthly anxieties and troubles. Truly the great central sun of the home has gone down but in the language of the scripture, I go to prepare a place for you and in the golden summer of another life he rests on in everlasting peace. Mr. Putnam as our postmaster for 30 years served our town and community faithfully and well and is sincerely mourned. God give the world more men like Mr. Putnam. Those who knew him best loved him most. -M.E.B.
(I'm not sure who M.E.B. was but he wrote a nice tribute. mm)

November 26, 1930
Elmer Eugene Putnam, postmaster at Big Lake for the past thirty years and assistant postmaster for twenty years before that, died last Friday at his home at Big Lake. Mr Putnam had been ill for the past four weeks with pneumonia and though he made a brave fight against death the disease finally struck him down.
Mr Putnam was a native of Big Lake, having been born there October 3, 1857. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 73 years, one month and eighteen days. He was the eldest son of John Elmer Putnam, who was one of the earliest pioneers of Big Lake. His father and mother organized the first school and the first Sunday School at Big Lake and later contributed the beautiful silver toned bell for the present Union Church there.
Serving as assistant postmaster with his father for twenty years and for the past thirty years as postmaster rounded out a period of over fifty years handling the mail for the people of Big Lake. In later years he was assisted by his two youngest sons, Lester and Bert Putnam. He was a conscientious citizen and a dependable official and a kindly neighbor, who will be greatly missed by the people of Big Lake and vicinity.
Mr Putnam is survived by his wife, four sons and four daughters as well as a number of grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers and one sister and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Union Church at Big Lake. The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings and was banked on either side with flowers. The service was conducted by Rev. Waller, who with Mrs. Waller contributed three beautiful songs. The burial was at the Big Lake Cemetery.
Among those at the funeral from out of town were Mr and Mrs Ernest Putnam, at Monticello, Mrs J. Doten of St Paul, Mr and Mrs Henry Goddard of Waconia, Iowa. W.H. Putnam of Little Falls, and his son, Dr. William Putnam of St Cloud. Ole Nelson, Mrs Clifford Nickerson and Mr and Mrs J M Haven of Minneapolis, Mrs Della Small and her nephew, Cecil Saunders of Brooklyn Center.
