Monticello Times
December 9, 1948

Big Lake has lost one of it's beloved pioneer women in the passing of Mrs. Putnam and she will be deeply mourned as she was a friend to all, both young and old alike. She was lovingly called "Grandma Putnam" by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She was so devoted to her home and her family. A quaint dear woman so dainty and so dear to all.
She loved flowers and had banks of them all through her home and yard, and before her health failed you could see her daily in her garden early and late. She was born in the East on June 19, 1868, the youngest daughter of Peter Putnam and his wife Patience Putnam who were New York residents, later moved to Illinois and then to Minnesota. Settling at what is now Silver Creek, Wright county. Viola Maud Putnam, was educated in the schools of Wright county. She sang in the choir of their local church and was an earnest worker in her church circles. She came to Sherburne county at an early date and was married to Elmer Eugene Putnam, son of the late Mr and Mrs John E Putnam, one of the very earliest eastern families that settled at Big Lake and here Mrs Putnam has resided all these many years, beloved by all. Grandma Putnam has gone from is but her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all. The recollections of a blessed life runs like a vine around the memory of our departed and every vine is now a perfumed flower. Mrs Putnam is survived by two daughters and four sons, namely Mrs. (Grace) WH Johnston; Mrs (Daisy) Bob Goddard; Lester Putnam all of Big Lake; Bert Putnam of Monticello, Ernest of Elk River, Julian of Fridley, and there are 30 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; one baby son and three daughters namely, Violet Doten, Gertrude White, and Pearl Putnam Huntington preceded her in death. Her husband EE Putnam was postmaster of Big Lake for 40 years. He died in November 1930.
Funeral services were held in Union Church, December 3 on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev Elton Nelson, who gave a lovely tribute to Mrs Putnam, Carl Wigren sang her two favorite hyms "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Saved by Grace." The floral offerings were many and beautiful and bespoke the love and esteem held for the departed. Peterson Bros had charge of the service. Interment was in the family lot in Big Lake Cemetery. Sincerest sympathy is extended the entire family by a wide circle of friends. The Times joins in the sympathy. All businesses in town were closed during the hour of the funeral. Those from out of town who attended were (Lovida White) granddaughter, Mr and Mrs Richard Steffens of St Paul and Mr and Mrs Putnam, a nephew of Minneapolis, Grandsons acted as pallbearers.
