Mrs Wm H Johnston suffered a stroke at her home on Sunday morning, December 23 and passed away a short time later. Grace Putnam, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Eugene E Putnam was born at Big Lake and spent her entire life in this community in early youth she was united in marriage to Wm H Johnston, depot agent at Big Lake for 45 years, who survives her, also three children Mrs Stanley Harmon (Helen Johnston), Wm H Johnston Jr and Leonard H Johnston all of Minneapolis, and seven grandchildren. Also four brothers, Ernest Putnam of Elk River, Julian Putnam of Anoka, Lester Putnam of Big Lake, and Burt Putnam of Monticello. and one sister Mrs Bob Goddard (Daisey Putnam) of Big Lake.
Funeral services were held at the Monticello funeral home on Wednesday, Dec 26 at 2 pm and interment took place in the Big Lake Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnston was the grand daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John E Putnam early pioneer residents of Big Lake (1856). The family has the sympathy of their many friends in the loss of their beloved wife and mother.

Grace Marion Putnam was born June 1, 1888 in Big Lake township. At the age of six she and her family moved to the village of Big Lake, where she lived for the rest of her life. She married William Johnston on October 10, 1908. To this union were born two sons, William and Leonard and one daughter, Helen (Mrs. Stanford Harmon).
Her life on this earth ended December 23, 1951 at 8:30 A.M., having suffered a stroke only one hour earlier. She was a kind, helpful and generous person. She was interested in young people and in the local school. Her interest in the school came naturally, as her grandfather [John E. Putnam] had helped to organize the school and both her father and her husband have served for many years on the school board.
She is survived by her husband, William Johnston; her three children; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Goddard of Los Angeles, four brothers, Lester of Big Lake, Bert of Monticello, Julian of Anoka, Ernest of Elk River; and many friends. Three sisters preceded her in death, Mrs. Pearl Huntington, Mrs. Violet Doten, and Mrs. Gertrude White.
Services were held in the Monticello Funeral Home on December 26, 1951 with interment at the Big Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Clarence Nelson, Albert Kurrasch, Ted Guppy, Gene Putnam, L. E. Stearns and Kermit Sundstrom. Honorary pallbearers were Neil Person and Fred Brentenson.
