Lester R. Putnam, Big Lake, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 1956 at Hart Hospital in Monticello, following a short illness. He was 56 years, six months and seven days old at the time of his death.
Mr. Putnam attended the Big Lake Public school and was employed by the Big Lake post office for twenty-four years. He resigned this position to establish himself in the hardware business where he remained until his death. He was the last member of the E. E. Putnam family living in Big Lake, and was a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Putnam, early pioneers of this area who located here in 1856.
On August 24, 1921, he was united in marriage to Gladys Stumbo of Monticello and to them six children were born: Gene of Monticello, Mrs. Theodore Guppy (Mertis) of Big Lake, Mrs. John Kasper (Beverly) of Richfield, Mrs. Gordon Fredrickson (Donna) of Anoka and Jerry and Nancy Kay, at home.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gladys Putnam; all of the children; four grandchildren, Connie Guppy, Randy and Sally Fredrickson and Joyce Kasper; two brothers, Ernest of Elk River and Julian of Anoka; and one sister, Mrs. Daisy Goddard of Burbank, California. Rev. D.A. Needham, pastor of the Big Lake Union Church preached the sermon and conducted the interment service at Big Lake cemetery.

Lester Raymond Putnam, owner-operator of the Big Lake Hardware for the past 12 years, died early Tuesday at Hart Hospital in Monticello at the age of 56. He had suffered a heart attack Saturday, the second this year. He suffered his first attack last spring, but since then and until a few weeks ago had been in fairly good health. He operated the store with the help of his son in law, Mr Guppy.
Mr Putnam was born at Big Lake in June 1900, the son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Putnam, and was married at Buffalo about 35 years ago to his wife Gladys, then of Carlyle, Iowa, who survives him at Big Lake.
Other survivors ate two sons, Eugene of Monticello and Jerry Lee of Big Lake; and four daughters, Mertis LaRie Guppy of Big Lake, Beverly Casper of Minneapolis, Donna Vie Frederickson of Anoka, and Nancy K Putnam of Big Lake.
Funeral arrangements are with the Monticello Funeral Home and the services will be there Friday at 2 pm with burial in the Big Lake Cemetery.
