Mertis Guppy, 65, of Big Lake died Tuesday, August 1, 1989, at the Monticello-Big Lake Community Hospital. She was born January 25, 1924, to Lester and Gladys (Stumbo) Putnam of Big Lake. She grew up there and graduated from the Big Lake High school. She married Edward (Ted) Guppy July 25, 1944 in Buffalo. They lived in Big Lake, buying the Hardware Hank store from her mother in 1961 and changing its name to Big Lake Hardware. Her husband died in 1975, and she retired from the hardware business in 1978. She was a past member of the Big Lake Lioness.
She is survived by her daughter, Corrine (mrs Curt) Jacobson of Big Lake; her mother, Gladys Putnam of Big Lake, two brothers, Gene and Jerry Putnam, both of Big Lake, three sisters, Beverly (Mrs Jack) Kasper and Kay (Mrs. LeRoy) Swanson, both of Big Lake, Donna (Mrs. Gordon) Fredrickson of Anoka; and two grandchildren.
Visitation was to have been Wednesday August 2, at the Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel from 5 to 8 pm. Thursday at the funeral chapel with Rev R W Oltmans officiating. There will be a private interment.
