William H. Johnston was born June 5th, 1876 at Richmond, Minnesota, in Winona County. He moved to Big Lake in 1903, where he held the position of Station Agent for Northern Pacific Railway. At the age of 69, he retired from the railroad, after serving for 42 years with the Northern Pacific. Prior to that he had been employed by the Milwaukee Railroad.
On October 16, 1908, he was united in marriage to Grace Marion Putnam of Big Lake. To this union were born one daughter, Helen, (Mrs. Stanford Harmon) and two sons, William, E. and Leonard. His wife preceded him in death on December 23, 1951. Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Helen Harmon of Big Lake, two sons, William E. of Minneapolis and Leonard of Duluth, seven grandchildren and many friends. Mr. Johnston was very active in civic and school affairs, having served on the school board at Big Lake for many years.
Funeral services were held...August 24, 1963 at the Peterson Funeral Home in Monticello, with the Rev. John Parish officiating. Pallbearers were E. J. Pearson, L. E. Stearns, Gene Putnam, Harold Nelson, Harley Clark and Harvey McKeen. Interment at Big Lake Cemetery.
