Big Lake Pioneer Dead
Mrs John E Putnam Was One of Earliest Citizens of Sherburne County

The people of Big Lake and vicinity were shocked Saturday to receive news of the death of one of Big Lake's pioneer women. Mrs. John E. Putnam, at the home of her son, W.H. Putnam, at Little Falls.
Miss Nancy Merriam was born Feb 23, 1829, at Oxford, Mass. and she received her education there. She became the wife if John E. Putnam in 1849, and they came to Minnesota in 1856, locating at Big Lake. Mrs. Putnam was an example of ideal womanhood, and the noble deeds accomplished by her will long linger in the memory of her many friends. It is wonderful to live a long life, but to live a long life well is still more wonderful. Mrs. Putnam knew the hardships of the early pioneers, and loved to talk to her friends of those adventurous days in Minnesota.
Since the death of Mr. Putnam in 1899 she has made her home with her children, of whom there are three sons and two daughters, namely, Geo. F. Putnam, Idaho; Mrs Lilla Putnam, Washington; W H Putnam, Little Falls; Mrs. Ella Moores, and E E Putnam, Big Lake. There are 37 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, who survive. The sincere sympathy of all in the community is with those bereaved.
Rev Palm, of Minneapolis, conducted the funeral and spoke elequently of the life that had been ended.
