Death
Obituary from a newspaper in Bend, Or, date unknown, but around 8 Apr 1932.Finf Bend Man's Body, Hanging From Rafter
The body of George F Lutnam, 68 year old resident of Bend and an employee of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co. for 12 years, shortly after 7 o'clock last night was found dangling from a rafter in a garage at 365 East Norton Street. Officers say he was despondent because of ill health and took his own life. Putnam was forced to give up his job as night watchman at the mill in September, 1930 because of ill health and it is said, several times, told relatives that he planned to end hid life. Early yesterday afternoon, while his wife was talking with neighbors about plans for flower beds, Putnam entered his home on East Marshall Street, went out the back way, evidently, and was never seen again alive. A search was started late in the evening and shortly after 7 o'clock, J H Loomis, with a flashlight in hand, opened the garage door at the unoccupied house, owned by Mrs. Curt Miller. Directly behind the body was dangling on a rope and closed the door to keep Mrs. Putnam from looking in. He then notified officials and the body was cut down.
The investigation by officials indicated that Putnam had entered the garage, climbed on top of a sort of pedistal, placed a hangman's noose around his neck and tied the other end to the rafter. He then kicked away the pedestal. Death was evidently instantaneous, the result of a broken neck. The body was in the garage six or more hours before it was found.
Since forced to give up work because of failing health, Putnam was dangerously ill a number of times and it is believed by friends that illness affected his mind. Aside from his widow, he is survived by two sons, Fay and J L Putnam, in Bend. Plans for the funeral has not been made this afternoon. The body is at the Niswonger & Winslow.
