Catherine SMITH

( - )

Catherine married John Peeveyhouse. She was listed as daughter Catherine Peeveyhouse in her father's will

Ms. Reeves did commit one error in her book Tennessee Smithology which has been corrected by Gabbard researchers. The Gabbards were a large bunch and difficult to deal with. She concluded that "Margaret Gabard" in Edward Smith's will was married to a George Gabbard. She was not - Margaret married Jacob Gabbard, George's brother. The confusion may arise because there is a marriage record in Washington Co TN for George Gabbard to Catherine Smith [not Margaret]. IF this Catherine was Margaret's sister, then something would have happened to George because Catherine was Catherine Peevyhouse in her father's will in 1807. The next problem is that George Gabbard lived to be an old man - dying in Mercer Co KY in 1851. It would seem that George Gabbard's Catherine is from a different Smith family. There is a deed dated in 1807 when George Gabbard and wife Catherine sold land in Washington Co TN so there's no question about his wife's name - she was not the Catherine Peevyhouse named in Edward Smith's will that same year. Two years later they have records in Mercer Co KY.

Since Catherine is a family name, it is conceivable that the Catherine Smith who married George Gabbard was a niece of this Catherine, daughter of one of the older brothers.
