Individual Details

Daniel Peevyhouse

(3 Feb 1785 - Ca 1847)

The dates of Daniel's birth compared to his marriage to Elizabeth Capps, simply doesn't add up - he didn't marry at age 13. I have been unable to find additional information. Either one of these dates are wrong or the marriage is wrong. I suspect the marriage is wrong - their children appear to have been born later than would be indicated by a marriage in 1798. Perhaps the marriage record was for a different Daniel & Elizabeth.

The following notes are from a WorldConnect file and the data has not been checked by me.

A 20 Feb 1847 issue of the Arkansas Intelligencer says that Daniel had been a resident of Crawford County for 25 years, placing their arrival as early as 1822.

Daniel Pevehouse appears on a Warren Co, TN tax list, 1812.

Apparently an undated record from the Territory of Arkansas: William Deval, Daniel Peevehouse, Ransom Moore, Andrew Lester, and John Rogers were appointed to mark and lay off a road from Ft. Smith and running the best way to the Ransom Moore Ferry, one half mile above the mouth of Lee Creek to cross the Arkansas River at the Ferry. Thence to the lower ford on Lee Creek and thence the best to intersect the Washington County Road at or near the fork of road leading to Dodges Mill in Fayetteville.

Daniel is the Crawford County 1830 Census with 1m -5, 2m 5-10, 1m 30-40, 1m 40-50. 1f 10-15, 1f 20-30.
He is said to have owned 320 acres in Jefferson County in 1830, as well as 120 acres in Crawford Co.

The Settlers of Lovely County and Miller County, Arkansas Territory: 1820-1830. John Ross had a claim, 1827, for a tract of country appropriated by the United States from the Cherokee known by Lovely's Purchase. Said to be in the top three western counties of Arkansas - probably Benton, Washington & Crawford, next to the Oklahoma line. At Batesville, AR, on 19 May 1830, Daniel Pevehouse, with witnesses Benjamin Weaver and Ransom Moore, testified that Hugh Pierce was a settle on Vian Creek in the Fall of 1827 and as of 1828 had 17 acres of cleared ground. He removed in the Fall of 1828 [Vian Creek said to be in present day Sequoyah Co, OK]

Said to come from Ransom Moore papers and this is almost as confusing as the notes on the estate settlement of Christopher Peevyhouse. Augustin Camron, Ransom Moore, and Daniel Pevyhouse bought for $300, 60 acres of land in Hot Springs County from one James Ball, 22 Sep 1830. [I believe this may have been a mortgage deed of Ball's]
30 Sep 1830 - note signed by James Ball. I have this day purchased of Augustin Camron, Daniel Pevehouse, Ransom Moore, all their stock of cattle running near Sallisaw in the Cherokee Nation ....said Ball take the above cattle at his own risk and if said Ball never gets the cattle or any part, he is never to have any recourse on said Camron, Pevehouse, and Moore.

Daniel and wife sold land, 8 Feb 1845. [I wonder where this record is and if it names the wife?]

My research:

In 1840, Van Buren Township, Crawford Co, AR. Daniel Pevehouse had 1m 5-10 [William J.], 1m 10-15 [Jacob], 1m 15-20, 1m 10-25,1m 50-60 [Daniel B. between 1880-1890] and a single female age 30-40 [Betsy, about age 37].

The only Pevehouse marker in the Pevehouse cemetery reads: Bynthia A. Pevehouse, wife of William, born 21 Sep 1835, died 11 Apr 1859 at the age of 23 years. A William J. Pevehouse is thought to have been one of the landowners of the tract. The 1850 census has Christopher's brother Daniel's widow, Betsy [Elizabeth Moore], age 47, born in Georgia and one of their sons was William J. Pevehouse, age 16 in 1850 - he would have been the same age as Bynthia. Daniel and Betsy also had a son Jacob, age 20 in 1850. And living with Betsy and her sons was Augustine Cameron, age 49, born Georgia. See notes on Daniel for possible relationship between an Augustine Camron, Ransom Moore & Daniel Peevyhouse.

Also there is a grave in Pevehouse Cemetery for:
Patsy (Capps) Moore, wife of Ransom Moore. She died 7 Oct 1875, age 66 years, 9 months, 12 days. [So she was born December of 1808.] It should also be noted that Daniel Peevyhouse's first wife is said to have been Elizabeth Capps. Perhaps Daniel and Ransom were brothers-in-law, married to Capps sisters.]
Mathew C. Moore, son of Patsy & Ransom, b. 24 Apr 1837, died 24 Apr 1877
Mary Jane (Moore) Woosley, daughter of Patsy & Ransom Moore. No marker.
Sara Ellen Moore, daughter of Patsy & Ransom Moore. No marker.

Both Daniel Peevyhouse and Ransom Moore died prior to the 1850 Census. The widows are found in Van Buren Township. Betsy Pevehouse in Household 85; Patsy Moore in Household 98. Both were also slaveholders and are on the 1850 Slave Schedule.
In 1850, Patsy Moore was age 42, b. Tennessee. Elizabeth, age 23, b. Missouri. The others born in Arkansas: Sarah E. 18, Mathew 13, Mary J. 10, Daniel age 7. In 1860, Patsy Moore was counted next to Luanna (Snider) Foster, young widow of Riley Foster. Living with her were Matthew, now age 23, and Nancy A. age 16 [maybe Mathew's wife]. On the Slave Schedule she had two slaves and Mathew had one - in 1850, Patsy had three. I believe in 1870, she was living next door to Matthew, but she is listed as Martha Moore, age 60, b. TN. All of the next Moore family has initials, but the head-of-household is M. C. Moore, age 33, b. AR.
