Christopher Peevyhouse

(Ca 1778 - Bef 26 Aug 1836)

Christopher was the original landowner of the tract of land were Pevehouse Cemetery is located in Crawford County - land now owned by my second cousin, Paul Hays. Several members of the Hays and Vinsant families are buried there, although there is only one marked Pevehouse grave.

The courthouse in Crawford Co, AR burned in the late 1880's so I am not sure of the source of the following concerning Christopher's estate, but apparently there are surviving records. Perhaps as records of the Territory of Arkansas, prior to statehood. These need to be found if you are a researcher of this family.

Ransom Moore was appointed Administrator of the goods and chattels of Christopher Pevehouse, dec'd, on 26 Aug 1836. Christopher's heirs were Ann Eve Sinclair [a married daughter] and John, Geneva, George W., Daniel, and Jacob Pevehouse. Christopher's brother Daniel was married to Elizabeth Moore - perhaps Ransom Moore was related to her.

Online data about the settlement of the estate has been written in such a manner that it is impossible to decipher dates and names, but it is apparent that Ransom Moore had debts to settle and heirs to pay. One of the notes reveals that Ann Eve's husband was James Sinclair. Daniel Pevehouse was the guardian of Jacob and Daniel as of 14 Jan 1840 - he signed for their proportional share. There was one debt against the estate when the heirs were ordered to appear in Chicot Co.

My research:

The only marker in the cemetery reads: Bynthia A. Pevehouse, wife of William, born 21 Sep 1835, died 11 Apr 1859 at the age of 23 years. A William J. Pevehouse is thought to have been one of the landowners of the tract. The 1850 census has Christopher's brother Daniel's widow, Betsy [Elizabeth Moore], age 47, born in Georgia and one of their sons was William J. Pevehouse, age 16 in 1850 - he would have been the same age as Bynthia. Daniel and Betsy also had a son Jacob, age 20 in 1850. And living with Betsy and her sons was Augustine Cameron, age 49, born Georgia. See notes on Daniel for possible relationship between an Augustine Camron, Ransom Moore & Daniel Peevyhouse.

Also there is a grave in Pevehouse Cemetery for:
Patsy (Capps) Moore, wife of Ransom Moore. She died 7 Oct 1875, age 66 years, 9 months, 12 days. [So she was born December of 1788. It should also be noted that Daniel Peevyhouse's first wife is said to have been Elizabeth Capps. Perhaps Daniel and Ransom were brothers-in-law, married to Capps sisters.]
Mathew C. Moore, son of Patsy & Ransom, b. 24 Apr 1837, died 24 Apr 1877
Mary Jane (Moore) Woosley, daughter of Patsy & Ransom. No marker.
Sara Ellen Moore, daughter of Patsy & Ransom. No marker.
