Nicholas is believed to be the eldest son, primarily because he was named first in his father's will. If he was married in 1786 as his widow stated in 1850, then he was likely born about circa 1760-1765. Unless some record is found that is earlier, it makes it possible for Nicholas to have been a child of the first Catherine Stonecypher. However, many databases make Nicholas some ten years older.

Nicholas Smith is on the Washington Co NC tax lists beginning in 1787. When Carter Co was formed, his property became part of that county and he is on the tax list in Carter in 1794 with one poll and 150 acres. He lived near Roan Mountain near the Miller Settlement. Nicholas bought land from the Millers as late as 1812. His wife's given name was Susannah and she is on the Carter Co Census records.

The census for 1820 is missing.

1830: 1 male 15-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 30-40, 1f 10-15, 1f 50-60 [Susannah Smith]

1840: 1 female age 60-70

1850: Susannah Smith was age 80 or born about 1770. The enumerator of Carter Co TN in 1850 wrote in the year of marriage in the column reserved for "Married within the year". He apparently misunderstood the directions, but what a nice little detail. Susannah stated she married in 1786. She was on p.167, Household 51, living alone but next door to Elijah Smith, age 57, no doubt a son.
There was also a Nicholas Smith in Household 53 - he was age 40 with a wife named Sarah and six children.

Children are related to have been Jacob who married Elizabeth White. Hezekiah whose wife was Ann, perhaps Ann Smith and a cousin. Elijah who married Louisa Moreland. Elisha who married Nancy Smith. Washington whose wife was Susannah, surname unknown. Nicholas who married Sarah Smith. The Tennessee Smithology book suggests that Ann & Sarah were daughters of George & Mary Smith [Mary was a sister to Nicholas].
