Bolling Clark

(Abt 1720 - Abt 1813)

Dates for his birth vary from 1717 to 1723. A Bible entry of 1838 gives a birth year of 1719.

His father's will, Louisa Co VA, 14 Aug 1741, states that Bolling was his 6th child and received 400 acres in Hanover Co on the NW side of the land of Mr. Thomas Carr & on the county line, two slaves Nance & Robin, a horse, a gun, a feather bed & furniture, two cows & Calves, his trooping arms, his great Bible and all his law books.

His marriage to Winefred Buford is based on the ages of the two children recorded in the Quaker records. Winiefred is listed in the Bible entry ca 1838 as having been born 1724 and her maiden surname is given.

Bowlin Clarke and Wenefred, his wife, and Edward Clarke, Eldest son and heir at law to Christopher Clarke, dec'd., of Albemarle co. 50 lbs. 400 acres...Majr. Carr's line. Sig. Bowlin Clark and Weneford Clark (x), Edward Clark Wit; George Holland, Dabney Pettus, Andr. Greehorn, Walter Mousley. 27 Aug.1754 proved by the three witnesses.

Lived in Albemarle, Bedford Counties in Virginia. Moved to Surry Co NC prior to 1773 according to Revolutionary pension application of his son Jonathan.

Records of Bolling, Winefred and Bolling's brother Edward are found in the records of the Quaker South River Monthly Meeting in Bedford Co VA from the mid 1750's to 1765 when Bolling & Winefred removed to New Garden MM in Guilford Co NC.

The last specific mention of Bolling Sr in the Quaker records is 1774, sometimes seen as his date of death, but there was a Bolin in 1785, that was disowned with no reason given. Winefred was granted a certificate to leave New Garden that same year.

On 30 Jun 1784, Bowling Clarke, David Clarke, & Micajah Clarke all had tracks surveyed by Robert Hanna in the Ninety Six District, SC. Bowling had two tracks of 320 acres each on 23 Mile Creek - these apparently granted 21 Jan 1785. David had 200 acres on Hurricane Creek, also granted 21 Jan 1785. Micajah had 400 acres surveyed on Hurricane. Both David & Micajah's land bordered that of John Johnson. The day before on 29 Jun 1784, John "Johnston" had 200 acres surveyed on Hurricane - he was most likely married to Agnes Clark and was their brother-in-law. Jonathan Clark appears to have been a surveyor himself and had several surveys including two on Hurricane Creek.

In 1790 in 96th District SC and 1800 in Pendleton District SC is found a John Johnson [husband of daughter Agnes?] with an older couple in the household. The Bible record of 1838, suggests that Bolin Clark died 1813. In 1813, Micajah [son?] sold property in Pendleton Dist SC that Bowling Clark had purchased in 1784.
