Individual Details
Joseph Staberg
(14 Jul 1876 - 6 Jun 1962)
According to the Hegra parish register, 1863-1879, shows that the maiden Sigrid Jonsdtr. and the bachelor, Andreas Jonsen Lilleflor, had a son, "Jon", who was born July 14 and baptized September 3, 1876.
In 1910 Joe resides on Second street in Hudson. He is 34 years old and has been married 11 years. He was born in Norway and is a naturalized citizen. He is employed as a carpenter in a factory. He is able to read, write and speak English and rents his home. His wife, Caroline, is 36 years old. She was born in Sweden and reads, writes and speak English. She is the mother of five children, all of whom are living.
Also in the household are a son, James C. age 9, born in Wisconsin; a son, Arthur O., age 7, born in Wisconsin; a son, Sigwald, age 5, born in Wisconsin; a daughter, Helga, age 3, born in Wisconsin; a son, Alfonse, age 1/12, born in Wisconsin; and an aunt, Anna Floren, widowed, age 62, born in Norway. She speaks Norwegian.
The aunt, Anna Floren, is likely the widow of Ole J. Floren who died in Willmar in 1904. She later returned to Minnesota where she died in Grove City in 1935.
By 1920 he is employed as a carpenter at the North Hudson carshops. His son, James is a baggage handler for the railroad. In the census he states he became a naturalized citizen in 1906.
In 1930 he rents his home 1418 Second street for $15 a month. He has a radio set. He is employed as an upholsterer at the car shops. Living in the household are his wife, Caroline, sons Art, Singwald, Reuben and daughter, Helga. Art is a blacksmith helper at the carshops, Singwald is a brakeman employed by the railroad.
Caroline died in 1931 and Joe re-married, in 1937, to Mary Baker Miller. In 1940 he and Mary are living in his Second street home. Only son Singwald lives with them. He is 63 years old and working as an upholster for the Omaha car shops.
Marty O'Connell knew Joe and Art as well as other of the Stabergs. He told me that Joe met Mary on a bus trip to Iowa. The Star-Observer reported the marriage on the front page on 3 Jun 1937, "Married in St. Paul". Minnesota Marriage records show they were actually married in Hennepin county where Mary resided.
I have vague memories of Joe, none of Mary. We delivered eggs to him weekly for a number of years.
