Controversial marriage marks 70 years
Although their marriage was controversial, it will have last for 70 years Aug. 24. James C. Staberg and Bertha (Miller) Staberg will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on that day.
Half of the town turned out for the wedding at Ebenezer Lutheran Church on Fourth Street (it has since been burned down) simply because of the controversy surrounding it.
She was German, and he was Norwegian. "His parents wanted him to marry a good Norwegian girl," said the Staberg's daughter, Annette. They didn't attend the ceremony and didn't speak until the Staberg's first-born son, James E., was 1 year old.
The Staberg's were longtime residents of Hudson, making their home at 1424 Second St. for more than 50 years. They moved to the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond three years ago. Bertha, 91, rents an apartment in the complex attached to the nursing home. James is 93.
He was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 1965 after 47 yers of service.
Bertha was known for raising gladioluses. She raised 3,000 each year and sold them to Hudsonites.
The two met when Bertha came from Bemidji, Minn., to work in her father's store, Pine Street Grocery. James was born in Hudson and lived here all of his life. The couple also have seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary earlier this month at a open house at the DeWitte home.
Both are members of Trinity Lutheran Church.
When asked by family members how they stayed together for 70 years they said, "You have to work at it all of the time."
