Letter to Nancy Hawkinson from Sing in February 1974:
"I was 18 years old when I quit school and went to work on the section for the Omaha Railroad. Our tool house was across the drawbridge that is down by the depot. We had to walk across the bridge to get to the Minnesota side of the river where our section house was located. We had six miles to patrol and work the track going up the hill toward St. Paul. I stayed with this job for five years and then I hired out in Eau Claire, Wisconsin as a brakeman on freight trains for the Omaha Railroad. I switched box cards in the yard at Hudson for awhile with Foreman C Sawyer who used to live up the ballpark in East Hudson. The other helpers on the job were either Joe O'Connell or Clyde Ferguson who both live in Hudson yet. My foreman, C. Sawyer, is still living out west at the age of 95. I left Hudson and worked for the railroad on the road out of St. Paul, Minneapolis and St. James in Minnesota and Itasca, Spooner and finally Altoona in Wisconsin. I am stationed in Altoona now on a freight run toward Chicago. My runs are any time of the day or night.
I do figure on retiring September 19, 1974. My birthday is September 19 and I will be 70 years old. I will have 52 years in then, working for the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad."
