Eleanor Staberg, 89, of Altoona, passed away Tuesday, September 5th, at the Claremont Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past three years.
Eleanor was born on September 18, 1910, to Margaret and William McDonald. She married Singwald on January 4, 1944, and they spent their entire lives developing friendships in the Altoona community.
Eleanor was an avid Packers fan and will be remembered for her flair for cooking. Her friends and family had the unique opportunity to enjoy some real old-fashioned country cooking. Eleanor will also be remembered for her strongly held Christian beliefs. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church and gave freely of her time, cooking at many church events. Eleanor will also be remembered by the many hungry transient train riders who passed through the Altoona railroad and were never turned down by Eleanor.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Sheri (Tom) Thompson of Eau Claire, Mike (Wendy) McDonald of Eau Claire, Rob (Kathy) McDonald of Portland, Oregon, Kevin (Barb) McDonald of Altoona, and Darcy McDonald of Springfield, Missouri; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delos (Beth) McDonald and Gene (Alice) McGovern; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Singwald; a son, Jerome, two sisters, Isabel and Evelyn; two brothers, Robert and Albert.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2000, at 7:30 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel, Father Norbert Wilger officiating. Eleanor will be laid to rest at the Calvary Cemetery.
