William Williams came to Montana about 1911 or 1912 in a covered wagon, settling
in the Snow Creek neighborhood. Doc was a prominent rancher in the Seven
Blackfoot area, so named for the hanging of seven Indians for either horse
stealing or for stealing gold from a group of white men. We've read varying
versions of the crime.
Likewise, we've heard different versions of how "Doc" received his nickname.
One version is that he gained the nickname through his natural abilities to
doctor animals; a second version was provided by Wright family researchers, Edna
and Marvin Miller, who said that Cecil Weeding (of Garfield county) told Marvin
that "Doc" got that name when he was cowboying, passed a lone cabin and hearing
a woman screaming investigated and proceeded to deliver her baby.
