John B. Engstrom, 86, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 1, at St. John's Hospital in St. Paul after a lingering illness.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 4 at Bethel Lutheran church. Interment was in Willow River Cemetery.
Four grandchildren survived: Judy, John, Jean and William Engstrom.

John B. Engstrom died Friday, Jan. 1, 1960 at the St. John's Hospital, St. Paul, where he had entered the day before his death. He was born 15 Dec 1873 in Sweden and came to the United States with his parents when a child of 4 years, with 1 brother and four sisters in 1887. The family home was established in Star Prairie, Wis., where the brother, Dan and family, resided until his death.
The several sawmills at Lakeland drew people seeking employment there, and as a young man he worked there. He left Lakeland in 1898 and came to Hudson, where he made his permanent home.
John Engstrom and Annie, daughter of Andreas and Sigrid Staberg, were married in Hudson by the Rev. N. L. Blomholm, pastor of the Ebenezer church, 4th st., about 55 years ago. To this union were born six children, two of whom died: Signora on her fifth birthdy and Elmer when an infant of less than a year. Four children survive: Alice Hoyer, Raymond Engstrom, Mrs. Thos. Kees (Helen) of Hudson, and Donald of Des Plaines, Ill.; also four grandchildren: Judy, John, Jean and Wm. Engstrom.
Mrs. Engstrom died on March 21, 1948 and Mr. Engstrom spent the last 11 years in the home of his daughter, Helen, and Thos. Kees.
As a young man, Mr. Engstrom was affiliated with the then Swedish church, and musically inclined, was active with groups of young folks, joining the choir, and presenting musical programs. He played several instruments and actively participated in the church work.
Mr. Engstrom was employed for several years at the Seibert Johnson factory on the West end of St. Croix St., where he took up the cabinent makers trade.
When Seibert Johnson closed down, he was employed by the the, Anderson Lbr. Co., previous to their move to Bayport. Later he worked at his trade at the St. Croix Mfg. Co. until in 1930, when he entered the employ of the Hudson School System were he worked until his retirement in 1950.
After his retirement he made "a hobby" of his trade and made many fine pieces of furniture.
Mr. and Mrs. Engstrom were afficiated with the Bethel Lutheran church, and he was buried from there, Jan. 4, Rev. N. P. Scheide officiating. Mrs. Scheide sang during the service "In Heavens Above" accompanied by Mrs. D. H. Sather at the organ. Interment in Willow River Cemetery beside his wife.
Pallbearers were Joe Florence, Frank Olson, Loren Leistiko, Norman Larson, Francis Kees and William Cavanaugh.
Several out of town nephews and nieces from Lakeland, Milaca, St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minn., attended the funeral.
