This information on Daniel Danielsson and family was provided by Jeff Mitchell who was researching the John andChristine Engstrom Staberg family in June 2004. He had obtained the information from Stan Danielson who is
who is descended from Nils Danielsson, a brother of Daniel's. In 2004 Stan lived in Bloomington, Minnesota. He has done a lot of research on this line and on families from the Gräsmark area.
Daniel Håkansson, born 15 Jun 1790, in Ulfsjön, Gräsmark, Värmland, Sweden, was a son of Håka Skåresson and Karin Persdotter. He was baptized 20 Jun 1790 in Gräsmark and died 11 Mar 1867 at Tiskaretjärn, Gräsmark and is buried in Gräsmark.
Daniel was born in the western Finn-forests in Sweden. These areas had been settled by his Finnish ancestors in the early 1600s. His parents were fairly well to do although they were only peasant farmers. His father and grandfather had owned and worked on Ulfsjön. Originally this homestead had been about 3,500 acres. His father, Häka Skäresson, had a sister, Marit, who inherited the southern farm on Ulfsjön, which is called Ulfsjötorp.
Daniel and family moved from Ulfsjön to N. Ängen, his mother’s place, in 1849. His son, Nils, became the head of the household at that time. They owned 32/960 of Norra Ängen. Another son, Magnus, stayed on Ulfjön, owning only 12/960 of that place. It’s tragic to see how much of the place had been sold, as Daniel’s father, Håka, inherited two thirds of Ulfsjön.
Daniel was noted in 1846-50 as not going to church or communion. His wife and the children all went to church and communion. In 1850 it is recorded that he took communion for the first time in many years. In 1823 a young college student named Carl Axel Gottlund who was raised in Finland made a summer trip through the areas the Finns had settled in the early 1600s. He attempted to visit Daniel on Thursday, the 6th of September 1823, but Daniel was not home at Norra Ängen. So, Gottlund went on to Ulfsjön where he met Daniel’s mother. It was noted by one account that Daniel was well known and a fiddler in this area. He was also a blacksmith. The same account tells of Daniel as a boy being interested in the flight of birds. He made himself some wings, jumped off the roof of the cow barn and landed in the manure pile. There is a very old section of barn still on the property in 1990. It could well have been the cow barn in Daniel’s day.
Daniel married Cathrina Persdotter on 11 Nov 1810 in Gräsmark. Cathrina was born 19 Jun 1790 in Norra Ängen, the daughter of Per Skåresson and Kari Persdotter. She was baptized 23 Jun 1790 at Gräsmark. She died 7 Jul 1858 at Norra Ängen and was buried 18 July 1858 at Gräsmark.
