He was born in Hudson, September 29, 1920, the son of John and Anna Staberg Engstrom.
He attended local schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1938. During his school years he served as president of his junior and senior class, played football and basketball and sang in the mixed chorus and glee club. He furthered his education at the Universities of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Washington and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis to learn woodworking.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
For more than 35 years he worked as a structural engineer for American Hoist & Derrick in St. Paul, retiring in 198 as vice president of operations for the firm.
