Notes
Death
Drye Community. — The residents of this community were deeply shocked at the sudden passing of John Bunion Furr, age 65, on Monday morning, January 10, about 10 o'clock. He left home in apparently good health earlier that morning to help his son move some hay from the barn on the Dewey Honeycutt farm near his home and was in the barn loft when he was struck with a sudden heart attack. An ambulance was called but he died a short time following the attack. The son of the late Nelson and Eliza Drye of Stanly county, Mr. Furr was a well known citizen and farmer of this community. He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist church and had served it as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deason, and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of deacons. He had long been active in church work and had worked ardently to help build the present church. It was his prayer that he would live to see the church indebtedness paid off, a prayer that was answered, the debt having been paid off in the fall of 1954. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Baptist church. The body lay in state 30 minutes prior to the services and interment was made in the church cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. W. J. Russell, Rev. Leonard, and Rev. C. C. Honeycutt. The choir sang three requested numbers, including ‘‘Where We'll Never Grow Old” and “Shall We Gather at the River". The large and beautiful floral offering was carried by the Ladies’ Sunday school class. Pallbearers were deacons of Philadelphia Baptist church and members of the Men’s Sunday school class served as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Furr was married to the former Pearlie J. Smith, who survives, on December 25, 1916. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jimmy Kennedy of Oakboro and Mrs. Floyd Cranford of Albemarle; three sons, Edgar and Loyd Furr of Concord, and Harold Furr of Stanfield; four brothers, Ralph, Will, and Roy Furr, all of Stanfield; and six, sisters, Mrs. R. V. P. Rinehardt, Mrs. Paul W. Tally, Mrs. Dwight Osborne, and Miss Zora Furr, all of Stanfield; Mrs. F. L. Hathcock of Kannapolis, and Mrs. Will Springer of Oakboro. Eight grandchildren also survive. As a long resident of this community, he will be greatly missed by his friends and all those who knew him.Stanly News and Press, Albemarle, North Carolina, January 18, 1955
