Notes
Death
Locust, Aug. 20. — The grain (sic) reaper makes no distinction as to whom, nor when, nor where his unexpected visits are made. On Thursday morning, August 13, Mrs. Eliza Jane Furr, age 74 months, was suddenly taken away. In her usual health, she was assisting with the house hold duties, sitting in the yard preparing vegetables for dinner when the Lord said it is enough, come up higher. The daughters, Miss Zora and Mrs. Dwight Osborne, made the alarm but no one was close enough to hear, so Zora held her mother, knowing her spirit had fled, until Mrs. Osborne drove to Stanfield, a mile away for help. Mrs. Furr was a good Christian woman, a devoted mother and a helpful neighbor. This scribe is a witness to these statements for she lived by her for years and at any time, day or night any accommodation was needed, Mrs. Furr and her husband, preceding her several years, were ready to lend a helping hand. She was a charter member of the Baptist church of this place which was established some 60 years ago, and continued faithful to her vows until the end. Funeral services were held from the church on Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. McGinnis, Rev. C. C. Honeycutt and Rev. J. D. Griffin who gave beautiful testimonies of praise to the deceased. The magnificent floral offering also gave much testimony of love and esteem in which she was held. These were borne by 16 or more granddaughters directed by Mrs. A. J. Furr. The family blanket was of mixed flowers, feverfew, roses, asters and fern. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were all grandsons. Surviving are 11 children, three having died in infancy. They are: C. H. and Mrs. Zeb Springer of Oakboro, J. B., Mrs. Pierce Rinehardt, Mrs. Paul Tally of Stanfield route, W. S. of Locust, Roy of Stanfield, Mrs. Fulton Hathcock of Kannapolis, Miss Zora Furr and Mrs. Dwight Osborne and Ralph Furr of the home. She is also survived by 40 grandchildren, 10, great-grandchildren, and six brothers, viz.: Hamp, Henry, Bob, Ed and Rufus Dry of Oakboro, C. P. of Stanfield route, and one sister, Mrs. Jim Brooks. Interment was in the church cemetery.Stanly News and Press, Albemarle, North Carolina, August 21, 1942
