Maxime RABOIN
(25 Feb 1851 - 17 Jun 1936)
Occupation: Farmer
Obituary, from Find-a-Grave:
The funeral of Maxim Raboin whose death occurred last Wednesday was held from the Catholic church. The deceased was born near Three Rivers, Canada and was 84 years old. For 28 years he had resided on his homestead farm six miles south of Cass Lake.
Mr. Raboin had been twice married. He was the father of eight children, five girls and three boys. The surviving children are Mrs. Charles Perrizo of Cass Lake, Mrs. Wilfred Vincent of West DuPere, Wis., Mrs. John Johnson of Deer River, Mrs. Frank Felbert of Easton, Minn.; Edward Perrizo of this place, Joe Raboin of Klikatat, Wash., Phillip of West DePere, Wis.
(Northland Times, June 26, 1936)
Declaration of Intent (citizenship) filed 13 JUN 1885 in Daggett, under the name "McSame Raboin." Must have been a scottish clerk.
Max's second marriage caused quite a lot of distress in the family, sadly. Doris Raboin Larson provided most of the following information, with general confirmation from other family members. Viney had just been divorced from her first husband, Frank Castonguay, who had been abusive and deserted her. Divorce, of course, was not recognized in the Catholic Church, so when Max married Viney, it was seen as little better than living in sin. The priest from their church (he was filling in temporarily for the regular pastor), even came to the house and took the children who were still at home (Mamie, Adele, and Ed) away to stay with relatives. The three children left the next week to live with their sisters in Delavan. Eventually, things settled down, and after a few years, Max and Viney moved to Minnesota to homestead. He remained estranged from the Church until quite late in life, when he was restored to full communion with the Church, as long as they didn't actually "live as man and wife." Viney still lived with him, of course, but more as a nurse.
Max's daughters loved their father dearly, but they were terribly afraid that he was going to Hell. Some of them never quite made peace with the situation. It didn't help that Viney was younger than some of them. She was also related by marriage to their mother, Max's first wife, Mary Bush. Mary's stepmother, Olivina Duchemin, had a daughter by her first marriage, and that daughter was Viney's mother. Confusing? It is, but I'm sure they were aware of the connection. She was like a cousin (more accurately, the daughter of a cousin).

Notes
Birth
The baptismal record states that the family resided at Saint-Guillaume.Christen
Godparents were Antoine Rabouin and Domithilde Desjarlais.http://interactive.ancestry.com/1091/d13p_20211208?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fsearch%2fdb.aspx%3fdbid%3d1091%26path%3d&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnBrowsing#?imageId=d13p_20211214
Residence
Enumerated with this family were Frédéric Raboin, a farmer (cultivateur), age 32, his wife, Domithilde Guillemette, age 28, and children: Frédéric, age 12; Maxime, age 10; Louise, age 8; Joseph, age 6; Georgina, age 5; Émond, age 3, and Josephine, age 2. He and his family lived in a one-story house, built of wood.http://interactive.ancestry.com/1570/4108840_00005?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fsearch%2fdb.aspx%3fdbid%3d1570%26path%3d&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnBrowsing#?imageId=4108840_00152
Marriage
Witnesses were Frederick Raboin and Margaret Bush. Reverend J. P. Magee officiated. Record obtained by correspondence.Census (family)
Enumerated with this family were Mark (sic) Raboine, a saw mill hand, age 24; his wife, Mary, age 20 (born in Onondaga Co.); and children: Philip, age 3; Joseph, age 2; and Vigneau (sic), age 2 months. They lived in a frame house, valued at $250. The census also reports that Max was an alien, that he owned his land, and that neither he nor Mary could read or write.https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11668-101392-76?cc=1918735&wc=M9SL-4WY:n1686421792
Census (family)
This seems to have been a visit, if indeed they were actually there at all. Max and Mary, along with his brother Frederick and his wife, are listed as residing with Max and Fred's parents, Frederick Rabouin and Domithilde Guilmette. The trouble is, none of their children are listed, and they were certainly living in Daggett, Michigan at the time. To add to the confusion, in the 1891 Canadian Census, these two families are again listed as living with Frederick, Sr. and Domithilde, along with all of their children, and their brothers and their wives and all of their children. It comes down to an absurd and impossible number of people living in this house, while at the same time it is well known that they were all living in various points in Canada or the United States. I get the feeling that Grandma Domithilde was asked to report about her family living there, and she proceeded to list all of her children and grandchildren, wherever they may have been living.Census (family)
Census states that Max and family had been living in Michigan for seven years. Daggett is part of Stephenson Township.Census (family)
Enumerated with this family were Mike Raboin, age 45, a farmer; his wife, Mary, age 39; and children: Philip, age 22; Joseph, age 20; Vina, age 19; Mary, age 15; Josephine, age 13; Maggie, age 11; Libbie, age 8; Adel, age 5; Mamey, age 1. There is also an additional child indicated, but this is somewhat problematic. The age 1/12 is recorded, but no name (other than the crossed-out given name of the head of the next family, which was moved to the next line). Much of the rest of the information for this individual is recorded by dittos or dashes, while every other person on the page has their information written out in full. Was there really a one-month-old child who was not listed in any other record, or was this entry simply a mistake? It also states that Mary had by this time borne 12 children, ten of whom were still living. My records show that three of her children had died by this point (Henry, Adelard, and Joseph Henry).http://seekingmichigan.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p16317coll3/id/45090/rec/1
Daggett is part of Stephenson Township.

Marriage
Census (family)
Daggett is part of Stephenson Township. Max and Viney were living alone at this time. He is described as a farmer, 57 years old, a naturalized citizen, who immigrated in 1860. This last statement is wrong; he came in approximately 1870. Malvina was 27 years old, according to the census, and she and Maxim had been married for 2 years.http://interactive.ancestry.com/7884/31111_4330162-01078?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fsearch%2fdb.aspx%3fdbid%3d7884%26path%3d&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnBrowsing#?imageId=31111_4330162-01079
Census (family)
Enumerated with this household were Maxime Raboin, a farmer, age 68; his wife, Melvina Raboin, age 37; and a boarder, Louis Chouinard, age 37. It states that he was a naturalized citizen, and had immigrated in 1889. The latter statement is wrong -- he had immigrated by 1871.http://interactive.ancestry.com/6061/4312594-01054?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fsearch%2fdb.aspx%3fdbid%3d6061%26path%3d&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnBrowsing#?imageId=4312594-01058
Census (family)
Max J. Raboin, a farmer, age 78; and Melvina Raboin, age 48.Census states that Max was a naturalized citizen, immigrated in 1869. It also states that at the time of their first marriages, Max was 55 and Melvina was 25. This is wrong -- these ages refer to their own marriage to each other.
